KUNDLI MATCHING
Kundli Matching or Horoscope Matching is a traditional method used in Sanatan Dharma for assessing compatibility between two individuals before marriage. According to Vedic Astrology, this is commonly known as Ashtakoota Matching.
For understanding traditional compatibility in married life, the horoscopes of the bride and groom are examined through 36 Gunas based on factors such as temperament, mental compatibility, physical compatibility, family life and other astrological considerations.
1. Ashtakoota Matching: Detailed Analysis of 36 Gunas
The foundation of Kundli Matching consists of eight Kootas, with a specific number of points assigned to each. Together, they make a total of 36 points.
1. Varna Koota — 1 Point
Varna Koota is traditionally considered in relation to mental disposition, ego, outlook and general capability. Classical texts describe four Varna categories. Traditionally, compatibility is assessed by comparing the Varna of the bride and groom.
2. Vashya Koota — 2 Points
Vashya Koota is traditionally associated with mutual influence, attraction and interpersonal dynamics between the two individuals. It is used to understand how the partners may relate to and influence each other.
3. Tara Koota — 3 Points
Tara Koota is assessed through the birth Nakshatras of the bride and groom. Traditionally, it is considered in relation to compatibility, wellbeing and general fortune.
4. Yoni Koota — 4 Points
Yoni Koota is traditionally used to examine physical and intimate compatibility. Different Nakshatras are associated with symbolic animal classifications, which are compared during the matching process.
5. Graha Maitri Koota — 5 Points
Graha Maitri Koota examines the relationship between the ruling planets of the Moon signs of the bride and groom. Traditionally, it is associated with mental friendship, understanding and communication between partners.
6. Gana Koota — 6 Points
Gana Koota classifies Nakshatra-based temperament into three traditional categories: Deva Gana, Manushya Gana and Rakshasa Gana. It is used to understand differences in nature, behaviour and temperament.
7. Bhakoot Koota — 7 Points
Bhakoot Koota is assessed from the relative positions of the Moon signs of the bride and groom. Traditionally, it is associated with family harmony, emotional compatibility and material circumstances.
8. Nadi Koota — 8 Points
Nadi Koota carries the highest number of points in Ashtakoota Matching. The three traditional Nadi classifications are Adi, Madhya and Antya. In traditional astrology, Nadi is considered in relation to health, compatibility and family or progeny-related considerations.
2. Traditional 36-Guna Scoring Scale
The total score is 36 points. Traditionally, astrologers interpret the score along with the complete birth charts rather than relying only on the numerical score.
- Below 18: Traditionally considered a lower level of Guna compatibility and generally examined carefully with the complete horoscopes.
- 18 to 25: Traditionally considered an average level of compatibility. Other factors in both horoscopes should also be examined.
- 25 to 32: Traditionally considered a comparatively favourable level of Guna compatibility.
- 32 to 36: Traditionally considered a high level of Guna compatibility.
3. Major Marriage Doshas
A complete Kundli Matching does not depend only on the 36-Guna score. Traditional Vedic Astrology also examines various Doshas and planetary combinations.
1. Manglik Dosha
Manglik Dosha is traditionally assessed according to the position of Mars from the Ascendant, Moon or other relevant reference points. Different astrological traditions use different rules for determining Manglik Dosha. Its possible influence on marital compatibility is therefore assessed from the complete horoscope.
2. Nadi Dosha
Nadi Dosha is traditionally considered when both individuals have the same Nadi classification. Classical astrology treats this as an important factor in Kundli Matching. Appropriate traditional rules and exceptions are examined before drawing a conclusion.
3. Bhakoot Dosha
Bhakoot Dosha is traditionally examined from the relative positions of the Moon signs. Certain sign relationships, including 2/12, 9/5 and 6/8 relationships, are traditionally given special consideration during horoscope matching.
4. Ascendant, Planetary Positions and Dasha Analysis
Beyond Guna Matching, an experienced astrologer may examine the complete birth charts of both individuals, including the 7th house, 8th house, planetary strengths and the applicable Dasha periods.
Jupiter and Venus
In traditional Vedic Astrology, Venus is considered an important significator for relationships and marriage in a man’s horoscope, while Jupiter is traditionally given special importance in a woman’s horoscope. Their strength, placement and affliction are examined as part of the broader marriage analysis.
Running Dasha
The planetary periods operating at the time of marriage are also traditionally examined. The placement and periods of planets such as Saturn, Rahu and Ketu may be considered together with the complete horoscope.
What Is Required for Complete Kundli Matching?
For a detailed Kundli Matching analysis, accurate birth information of both the bride and groom is required:
- Date of Birth
- Exact Time of Birth — for example, 10:15 AM or 9:30 PM
- Place of Birth — city or district
Using these details, the horoscope can be examined for traditional Guna Matching, Doshas, planetary positions and other compatibility factors.
